From RCDU…

I just started reading the first issues of batman and was a little

suprised. In the first issue alone he machine-guns a bunch of

gangsters to death, throws a mad scientist out a window and assumes he

dies (although it was into water and we all know what that means…)

and then lets 2 men who were mutated by the professor to beat each

other to death cause they were better off that way…

I know it was a different time and all, but when did his no killing

rule really go into effect for both good AND bad guys, 50’s? 60s?

> >According to Wikipedia, the no-killing rule came into play after the

> >first issue of Batman, after which the editor invented the rule. That

> >would’ve been about 1939 or 1940.

>

> Specifically October 1940, DC under new editor F. Whitney Ellsworth

> introduced their board of review, composed of educators, celbrities

> and psychologists dedicated to making sure all their publications were

> “clean and wholesome”. Batman no longer carried a gun and Superman

> was no longer allowed to dispose of criminals by throwing them “way up

> high”.
