Heavy Metal
After ignoring this due to poor reviews at the time, after the superb South Park parody it seemed worth a look. The movie is an excellent animated comics anthology with all the stories entertaining and the animation mostly good. It could be argued that the Lovecraftian encapulating story is unnecessary and a bit passe, but it just works.
9.5/10
Fist of Legend
Was expecting much more, but while Li looks a star, the plot never really goes beyond the standard martial arts movie, and with a lack of decent character development you don’t really care for anyone involved.
7.5/10
Jumper
A good example of a dumb popcorn movie done well. The premise is great, stunts and effects are excellent and it never outstays its welcome.
8.5/10
Gekiranger movie: Nei-Nei! Hou-Hou! Hong Kong
Compliments the excellent series with a great Bruce Lee style adventure in Hong Kong. As per most Sentai movies, there can’t be much development as it is mid season optional treat, but this was excellent fun with innovative costumes and a good take on the old martial arts tournament storyline.
9/10
Rambo 4
Excellent updating of the Eighties action flick, with realistic action, good pacing and believable performances by all. Rambo is no longer the cartoon soldier of the third film, with a good set of supporting characters to work with. The violence is visceral and 70s like, with the grimness of the film not letting up and providing a more thought provoking experience then the modern Hollywood flick.
9.5/10
Semi-Pro
The basic Ferrell formula, with a little less surreal humour and more character development. Enjoyable comedy, with several laugh out loud moments (Jive Turkey) and a decent plot, but overall not as good as Talladega Nights/Blades of Glory.
8/10
Last House On The Left
Expecting a rough around the edges predecessor to Nightmare on Elm Street, this was extremely dissapointing, dragging along, with ill advised comedy characters, lack of action and bizarre ending with the villains being killed by the ordinary family in a poorly executed way.
1/10
30 Days Of Night
Very poor film, with a nice concept wasted with a lack of action and nonsensical plot. The main problems are the story jumping around during the 30 days when they are hiding from the vampries, the vampires communicating in incomprehensible screeches leaving their plans unseen, the head vampire being easily destroyed, lack of decent action and completely illogical decisions by the characters.
There is no explaination of what the vampires are there for, apart from food, and where they would go to next. The one good action scene with a chainsaw equipped tractor bizarrely ends with the driver ploughing it into a shop and then trying to blow himself up with signal flares (!).
